You have to hope that the rubber will squash inwards and seal against the thread which is why you need to start with it being tht fitting.

Jim Try removing the bolt, clean up around the bolt hole and use a 'Dowty seal' between the bolt head and the sump. refers to a silicone such as "Instant gasket" I think a Dowty washer would be preferable to a plain annealed copper washer Just to close this out, I removed the leaking sump bolt and the the washer is a spring type which of course was allowing the oil that was leaking down the thread to exit around the bolt head.

Obviously , removing the engine to fit a new sump gasket is the last option. If you can get the bolt out I would remove it and find a rubber O-ring or a flat rubber washer (I have mixed sets of both at home but you could even make one out of old inner tube) and push a tht fitting one onto the bolt before nipping it up.
